Champion of the week - Rek'Sai

Rek'Sai is not too different to how Lee Sin was in season 4. She excelled in the Warrior heavy meta, and is great with Cinderhulk too. Whatever the jungle throws at her, she has a great kit for ganking and applying pressure early game, and has enough CC for the late game. Whether played as a tank or as a bruiser, she excels from the jungle. She is also great in most team comps, and makes a fantastic diver or peeler, and her two forms mean she is a great duelist and counter-jungler because she essentially has six skills rather than the three that most other junglers have, similar to Lee Sin and Elise. She is a little weaker than some junglers at level six due to her low-impact ultimate, but is still a fantastic pick nearly all the time.

Strengths

-Great clear
- Strong early ganks
- Good scaling
- Versatile builds
- High base damage
- Some global presence
- Great vision control in burrowed form

Weaknesses

- Low-impact ultimate in fights
- Low CC when tanky
- Squishy when built damage-heavy
- Jack of all trades, master of none

When to pick Rek'Sai

- When opponents have invisibility reliant junglers (e.g. Eve, Rengar)
- When you want early pressure
- Team needs versatility in the jungle

When not to pick Rek'Sai

- When your lanes have very low CC
- If you need a heavy carry/assassin in the jungle

Rek'Sai's skill set

Passive - Fury of the Xer'Sai
Use in kit - This is what gives Rek'Sai great sustain, due to building fury rather than using mana and regaining health while in burrowed form. In addition, this is what makes her such a great counter to Eve, Rengar and Shaco as she can simply burrow and detect any movement even in invisibility, countering their flanks and tracking them down from out of sight, such as in a bush.
Summary - Rek'Sai gains fury while in combat, gaining 5 fury for a basic attack or 10 for any offensive ability landed. When she becomes burrowed she regains health over time, while consuming fury. She also gets reduced vision while burrowed, but gets a sonar-esque locater on enemy movement.
Using this skill - Use this to sustain yourself between camps or when heading toward a gank so that you can keep your health high. You can also gain fury from the scuttle for some extra sustain. Another great tip is to sit in a bush and wait for the enemy jungler to come by, especially if they are invisibility reliant. You will be able to detect them with your sonar and countergank them accordingly, turning around the gank into your teams favour

Q - Queen's Wrath/Prey Seeker
Use in Kit - Queen's wrath is a 3 hit buff to Rek'Sai's auto-attacks, turning them into an AoE. This improves her camp clear, and also acts as an auto-attack reset to increase Rek'Sai's damage output on either grouped camps or single targets, and each attack deals bonus damage. Prey Seeker replaces this in burrowed form, and is a linear skill shot that reveals enemies and does a small amount of damage, which makes scouting over walls for neutral buffs or enemies pretty easy.
Summary - Queen's wrath resets auto-attacks and deals 15/25/35/45/55 (+20% Bonus AD) extra damage on each attack, as well as splashing out. Prey Seeker reveals the opponent for 2.5 seconds and deals 60/90/120/150/180 (+ 70% AP) damage to the first target hit
Using this skill - Queen's Wrath is mostly used as a simple damage buff, and for making Rek'Sai's clears so good. It also buffs her ganks and teamfights and is what gives her such great base damages throughout the game. Prey Seeker has all sorts of uses, most of which are scouting. It can locate jungle camps at range, reveal enemies moving past you, and cause invisible enemies to break stealth. One notable use is that it can reveal invisible enemies that are not moving with good prediction, and can also scout brushes to prevent facechecks.

W - Burrow/Un-Burrow
Use in Kit - This is how Rek'sai unlocks both sides of her kit. She changes into either burrowed or un-burrowed forms. The burrowed form has very limited offensive capabilites, but is great for getting around as it has her gap-closer and increased movement speed. Her un-burrowed form has high damage but much lower mobility, and as she un-burrows she knocks up anyone in her immediate area, and this is her main and only CC ability.
Summary - While burrowed Rek'sai cannot autoattack but gains 15/20/25/30 movement speed and access to tremor sense and her passive health regeneration. If she chooses to unburrow, it knocks up enemies in the immediate vicinity for 1 second and deals 40/80/120/160/200 (+ 40% Bonus AD) Physical damage to everyone hit. This knockup has a cooldown of 8 seconds on every target, during which they are immune to a second knockup.
Using this skill - This skill is Rek'Sai's only way of CC'ing any opponent so it vital during ganks. This means that travelling around in un-burrowed form is much better, as you can CC people if you run into them and gain the increased movement speed from the burrowed form, making your movement more efficient. One tip of note is you can interrupt certain gap-closers with your knockup before they land, such as Lee Sin's Q.

E - Furious Bite/Tunnel
Use in kit - Furious Bite works as a finisher for Rek'Sai, as it gains damage for each point of fury and if she has full fury on activation it deals true damage. Tunnel works as a gap closer and is important to spread the around the map to make full use of her ultimate, which will be mentioned later
Summary - Furious Bite deals an extra 1% damage for each 1% Fury Rek'Sai has, with a minimum damage of 80/90/100/110/120% of her Bonus AD in physical damage, or true damage if she has max Fury. Tunnel creates a tunnel which lasts for 10 minutes, can be destroyed by enemy champions if they stand on it for 1.5 seconds and can be traversed every 10/9/8/7/6 seconds. Rek'Sai can have up to 8 tunnels on the map at any given time.
Using this skill - Try to use Furious Bite when you get max fury in either a gank or in the jungle. If you are unable to reach max fury, use it as late as possible to get the greatest damage. This is also an auto-attack reset, and is great for using in conjunction with smite to secure neutral objectives. If timed together with smite it helps with the secure and lowers the chance of a steal if done correctly. Tunnels should be placed throughout your own jungle, so you can travel through quicker, and especially to get over some walls in the jungle. When ganking, use tunnel to get underneath the opponent, so that the knock-up from un-burrow can land.

R - Void Rush
Use in kit - Although it grants limited combat effectiveness in the form of increased attack speed, it is more useful for its global presence. Rek'Sai can quickly travel to any tunnel she has, meaning she can quickly countergank, or simply spend more time farming and less time in base.
Summary - Rek'Sai passively gains 20/40/60% attack speed. When activated, she briefly channels for 1.5 seconds and then travels to one of her targeted tunnels. Once there she can move freely but starts any movement in her burrowed form. It has a cooldown of 150/110/70, but it can be interrupted by CC or any form of damage, but if interrupted it will be put on a reduced 8 second cooldown.
Using this skill - This gives Rek'Sai a global presence usually reserved for people with teleport or Twisted Fate/Shen. This means she can split push as a jungler and still turn up for objectives like Baron or Dragon. She can also flank with the boost of homeguard by ulting from the base, and farm harder than most other junglers thanks to having to spend minimum amounts of time in base. However, this ult becomes less useful from behind, so try to be careful where you place your tunnels.

Rek'Sai's Build Paths

Tank'Sai

CinderHulk Enchant, Randuin's Omen, Warmmogs, Spirit Visage/Banshee's Veil, Ninja Tabi/Mercury Treads, Righteous Glory/Guardian Angel

This full tank Rek'Sai will be super hard to kill, with plenty of health and defensive stats, but have limited offensive capabilites. This means she'll be reliant on her base damages to hurt enemy squishies, but will have more limited splitpushing capabilities. Getting the Skirmishers Sabre makes up for her lack of damage somewhat, but means she can't take Chilling Smite for the extra CC.

Bruiser Rek'Sai

Warrior Enchant,  Randuin's Omen, Warmmogs, Spirit Visage/Banshee's Veil, Ninja Tabi/Mercury Treads, Righteous Glory/Guardian Angel

This is Rek'Sai's old build when Warrior was really strong, and gives her a little more damage than the above build and greater early game pressure at the trade off of a weaker late game due to being less tanky.

Rek'Sai the Duelist

Warrior Enchant, Ravenous Hydra,  Randuin's Omen, Warmmogs, Spirit Visage/Banshee's Veil, Ninja Tabi/Mercury Treads

The Ravenous Hydra gives Rek'Sai a lot more dueling power but makes her really squishy early game. You can build more damage items rather than the tank items, such as Trinity Force or Blade Of The Ruined King, but it is much harder to play. This build is far weaker in teamfights unless snowballing really hard, but gives a lot more pressure in a splitpush so should be used if your team needs a duelist to splitpush or you are snowballing super hard out of the laning phase.

Using Rek'Sai

Lane - Try to farm fairly hard, but apply some early pressure. Your ganks are good, your counter-jungling is great so either get in the face of some laners or go mess with the enemy jungler for a bit. Either way, most junglers can't keep up with you early so make sure to try to out-pressure them.

Midgame - You still have great damage, so try to keep fighting while you are still strong. You can secure objectives and group up for teamfights or splitpush if you are ahead and use your ult to jump into the teamfights, if your team can defend your tunnels.

Lategame - You are slightly weaker here. You can only really do damage to carries, and are outscaled by most laners and some junglers too. Try to peel for your carries if you can't catch someone out of position.

Summarising Rek'Sai

A great jungler in nearly any situation and a safe blind pick, she does really well in near every comp. Despite this she has limited clear strengths that make her stronger than other more specialised junglers outside of her global presence. She scales well but not amazingly and her early game is good but not as strong as the junglers specialised in it such as Lee Sin. A safe all round pick.
