Unorthodox Picks - Yasuo Top

YasYasuo is usually seen as a strong assassin in the midlane. He has strong early laning against AP mages that are cooldown reliant, and squishy, as he can blow them up and outplay them with his windwall and dashes with E. Late game, he has great engage followup via his ultimate, and insane damage thanks to his passive giving him double crit chance, and the auto-attack boost on his Q. However, he is very squishy and can often need synergy with his team to get his ultimate off well without being blown up, and he can struggle in lane against bruisers that simply out-damage him while building tank. He has seen some competetive play recently in most regions, usually as a specific counterpick to Gnar, to outsplit push The Missing Link.

Why would I pick Yasuo top lane?

Yasuo can be strong given the right team composition, and is great as a third threat into a composition. If you have a really tanky jungler, and your team has knock-ups like Malphite, Orianna or Alistar, he can be very potent throughout the game. On top of this, he snowballs extremely hard, so a Yasuo with a lead can really run away with a game on his own, even from the top lane! Late game, even if his team has no knock-up synergy, he can simply avoid teamfights and split push his way to victory with his high AD and his exceptional duelling potential. This style is even stronger on top lane Yasuo than on mid-lane Yasuo, as it is more normal for top laners to take teleport, so may be the main reason you choose him.

When do I avoid Yasuo

Do not blind pick Yasuo before your team has any champions chosen. Without knockups, he is relegated to split push duty and really struggles to teamfight well as his ultimate becomes very hard to set up. On top of that, if picking him top, he can really struggle against the stronger bruisers in the game such as Irelia, Darius and Jax. These champions will simply rush Frozen Heart or other high armor items and still do more damage than you because of Yasuo's weaker early game. Also, you need a tank in the jungle and (preferably) support as well to make sure you have tanks to play with. A full squishy team is very easy to catch out, so if all your teammates are easy to kill don't play Yasuo!

How do I use Yasuo effectively?

Yasuo is heavily reliant on snowballing, and is a strong laner against most lane matchups, with high level one damage AND great outplay potential. Therefore, you should always get an edge in lane, or roam out to make the difference with either a teleport or simply walking to midlane. Once you have a lead keep it and you can be a significant split-push threat by simply being the most fed person on the map, giving you excellent tower pressure if your team can co-ordinate with you to hold one lane while you split-push. However, if your team needs you to win fights and has good knock-up synergy, feel free to teamfight too. In this scenario you should NOT be the first one in the fight, you are super squishy so stay in the backline until a great opportunity arises, or flank your opponents so you can take out the enemy backline without being hindered by their tanks.

Summary

Yasuo can be a fantastic split-push threat, as well as a great third threat from the top-lane. This gives him very high carry potential, and he scales into a complete monster in the late game. However, in the top-lane he takes a tank away from the team, so you need other tanks in the team before he can be chosen. To add to this, he needs knock-up synergy to be really effective in teamfights with his ultimate. Despite all this, he can be very effective in the right composition, that gives him the correct benefits and allows you to carry really really hard.
